6th grade Language Arts Overview

The two texts used for 6th grade language arts are as follows:

  • English Workshop  by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston
  • Vocabulary Workshop by Sadlier and Oxford (level A)

During the year we will be studying grammar, vocabulary and spelling. In addition, the major writings will be:

  •  Informative Writing
  •  Biographical Writing
  •  Persuasive Writing

7th grade Language Arts Overview

In 7th grade we present an integrated Language Arts and Literature Curriculum for the purpose of developing literacy.  Our goal is to integrate instruction in grammar, usage and mechanics with reading, literature, written and oral language.

  • The Write Stuff, Monthly Publications

The Spelling/Vocabulary test contains 15 chapters, which present 25 words in each.  The text has a nice variety of activities which cover word pronunciation, word meanings, parts of speech, synonyms, antonyms and writing exercises.  The students will be quizzed after each chapter and tested after every three chapters.


The English Workshop text includes classroom and independent activities involving prewriting and writing skills, sentence structure, paragraph structure, grammar usage, parts of speech, punctuation, and capitalization.  These activities will reinforce the material taught in 6th grade and prepare the students for the more ongoing, practical writing activities required in 8th grade.
